Kiliona Young
Songwriter, Guitar, Vocals
Kiliona Young was born on Oahu to a family of entertainers. When he was in the first grade his family packed up and moved to California taking their Polynesian production on the road. After discovering music was part of his life, it would be the bass he would take up first followed by the guitar. He was Influenced by all the instruments and musicians that he was surrounded by. In his high school years, the family moved back to Hawaii but they continued to travel with long and extended international tours to Japan, Korea, and Guam. He wrote his first song in 10th grade and in his early 20ʻs, while in Guam, he really began his path toward writing and singing. When he returned to Hawaii he joined the band Moemoeā which allowed him to be free to play the many genres of music that moved him along with his brother Kalei. The brothers also joined the Mana Maoli Collective. Kiliona is a loving husband, proud father of five, cultural teacher as well as a writer, rhythm guitarist, and vocalist in Pō & the 4Fathers.
Kawai Hoe
Songwriter, Ukulele, Vocals
Born to a family of Hawaiian musical instrument makers, Kawaiolimaikamapuna Hoe, grew up immersed in native Hawaiian sounds. As a child, his father always encouraged him to sing and play music, and he got his first ukulele in elementary school. It was in High School for a project in his Hawaiian language class that he wrote his first song in ‘Ōlelo Hawaiian. Fast forward several years and Kawai would meet Roman Corpuz at a family gathering where they jammed for the first time together. After that night, they continued to jam together, creating a musical bond and developing new songs. They made it official and started performing together as Pō. Kawai was invited by the Mana Maole Collective to perform in Aotearoa (New Zealand), and in preparation for the trip, Kawai went to a band practice on Hawaii Island that just so happened to be at the home of Kiliona Young, where he would also meet Kalei Young. Their connection was instant and so strong that they decided after their Aotearoa performance to merge into one band, Pō & the 4Fathers. Kawai has had the honor of sailing the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe, Hōkūle’a, on its world voyage home from Tahiti and throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Kawai is a highly respected musician and songwriter and he continues to make Hawaiian musical instruments like the ipu (gourd) and the ‘ohe hano ihu (nose flute). Kawai writes, sings and plays guitar and ukiuele for Pō & the 4Fathers.
Kalei Young
Bass, Drums, Vocals
Kalei Young is the youngest of ten children with one of his siblings being Kiliona Young, who also happens to be a band member of Pō and the 4Fathers. Born into a family of traveling Polynesian entertainers, the family’s Polynesian show, Kamoiwa Productions, performed throughout California, Hawai’i, Japan, Korea, and Guam. At an early age, the show engraved a path forward for him with his first musical experience being drums and ukulele. A multi-instrumentalist today, Kalei mostly plays the bass and drums. It was in the late 80ʻs and early ’90s that he fell in love with beats, built a studio and began creating his own sounds. Living on Hawai’i Island, Kalei is a grateful husband, blessed father of three, and dedicated musician. Kalei plays with several local bands and performers and is proud to be a founding member of the popular Hawai’i Island band, Moemoeā. Kalei writes, sings, plays the drums and bass with Pō & the 4Fathers.
Roman Corpuz
Lead Guitar, Vocals
Born on Oahu, Roman grew up mostly on the east side of the island. Roman started playing ukulele around the 7th grade and from there he moved to the guitar, where he tuaght himself and learned to play by ear. In high school, Roman was part of a reggae band that opened the door to the band B.E.T. which he was in for 10 years. He connected with Kawai Hoe in 2009 after a casual jam at a baby’s birthday party and together they formed the band Pō, as well as joined the Mana Maoli Collective. Roman’s inspiration and unique style comes from an eclectic range of music spanning from reggae to the blues to any emotional music he feels from deep in his Na’au. Roman is a loving father of two daughters and works at protecting the ‘āina (land) from invasive species throughout the islands, and is the lead guitarist and backing vocalist of Pō & the 4Fathers.
August Lopaka Colon Jr.
Percussion
With his father being the band leader, percussionist and bird caller for Martin Denny (and known as the Sophisticated Savage), Augie B. Lopaka Colon Jr.’s first language was destined to be the bongos. Born on Oahu, his family moved to Molokai when he was five years old. As a youth he was around his Dadʻs music and always excited to be making noises. By sixth grade he returned to Oahu for school where he would have his first band experience and knew his future was playing music. During his freshman year he returned to Molokai and graduated from high school always immersing himself in percussion. He continued his music education at the University of Hawaii where he was named Most Inspirational Percussionist. It was at this time he joined a hālau and first met future band mate Kawai Hoe. Early in his music career Lopaka co-founded the ground breaking band Pure Heart with Jon Yamasato and Jake Shimabukuru, followed by founding the band Colon with Jake again and Guy Cruz. Throughout his life, Lopaka has been a prolific percussionist which has connected him to many other artists like John Cruz, Henry Kapono, Mick Fleetwood, Makana, the Mana Maoli Collective, and now Pō & the 4Fathers.
Jordan Lopez
Keys, Trumpet
Born and raised in Ypsilanti, Michigan, at an early age, Jordan gravitated toward music and started playing the family piano. This love of music led him to music class in school where he became proficient with several instruments including the trumpet. By age 15, he was good enough to get gigs. “Music is like a ticket to any culture around the world,” says Jordan. During high school, he would sneak into the University of Michigan’s School of Music where he would practice with college students and stay out of trouble. When he graduated from high school he went to the local community college where he would continue his music studies and expand into other trades. He’s been a lead vocalist, pianist, and trumpet player for many bands. He’s had the honor of being part of an opening act for Tyrese, Genuine, Casey & Jojo, as well as Parliament Funkadelic at the Majestic Theatre in Chicago. In 1997 he started teaching music and in 2008 he was offered a job at an elementary school on Hawai’i Island he couldnʻt turn down. It’s here in Hawai’i that he would meet Kalei, Kiliona, and Kawai and slowly be incorporated into Pō & the 4Fathers. Jordan is proud and grateful to be a father of two boys, teach music, coach, and have an original jazz song on The Weather Channel since 1999. Jordan plays keyboards and trumpet in Pō & the 4Fathers.
Kalei Yamanoha
Steel Guitar, Accordion, Trombone
Kalei was born in Santa Rosa, CA in the early 90s. His father was from Oahu and wanted to make sure the families Hawaiian culture was passed on to his children, so at around 8 years old he was given a choice of either taking up hula with his sister or playing music in his father’s Hawaiian band. The chose music and this became Kaleiʻs introduction to Hawaiian music as he decided on the ukulele and guitar. When he was 11 years old his mother introduced him to Black Sabbath, it was then he decided he didn’t want to play Hawaiian music anymore and bought his first electric guitar. In high school, he started a bluegrass jug band that ended up touring and during this time he learned how to play the accordion. From 17-25, he played with folk funk bands playing accordion, banjo, and trombone. Around 25 he began touring all over the United States with various Folk, Country, and Brass bands. To date, Kalei has played in 48 states. North Dakota and Maine are the only two he has not performed in yet! He returned to Hawai’i in April 2020 to care for his grandparents, which is when he met Roman through his cousin doing environmental conservation. Kalei Young and Kiliona Young had close ties to his family leading to many connections with him and Pō & the 4Fathers. The Playing for Change video is the first time he had the opportunity to play with the band. Kalei is stoked to be a full-time musician on Hawai’i Island and plays the trombone, accordion and lap steel in Pō & the 4Fathers.
Adam Zopel
Bass
With a father who was a music teacher and a basement transformed into a music studio full of instruments in the small town of Wausau Wisconsin, Adam was destined to pick up an instrument. He started playing the violin at four years old, which led to the cello and finally the bass. At fifteen he started playing with the family band, The Zopel Jazz Quartet. For a few years, he was in a successful funk band called Endangered Species. He then moved to Alaska where he played with a vibraphone player for five years and graduated from the University of Alaska with his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education/Adventure Leadership and his Master of Arts in Teaching. His brother then convinced him to perform with him in bands on cruise ships. It was here where he would meet his wife who also worked on the cruise ship. In 2012 he and his wife moved to Hilo, Hawaii, and accepted a teaching job. He currently performs with different artists in Hawaii island and this is how he was introduced to Kiliona, Kalei, and Jordan. He loved the music he heard from the band so when they asked him to join and play bass, he was in.
